Chapter 123: Controlling a Wolf Girl Is Such a Troublesome Matter

Back to reality.

A monster with oversized fangs lunged at a Knight. But it suddenly froze as a foreign object pierced its chest – a razor-sharp ice pillar. That wasn’t all – a diamond-shaped object the size of a fist suddenly fell from somewhere and exploded, releasing a soul-chilling cold wave that froze everything in its path. The monsters near the impact point completely turned to stone, while those further back were significantly slowed.

The ice grenades focused more on inflicting adverse effects rather than damage, making them perfect for stopping the monsters’ storm-like charge.

Stunned for a few seconds by the surprise, all the knights turned their eyes toward the person who had launched those grenades – that would be me – but quickly had to return their attention to the monsters before them and continue fighting.

“Alright, Rand, Kiska, Agaht, and you two, protect Faima and Papet-san’s family. I’ll go help them out.”

“I’m coming too.”

With that, Kuro and I grabbed our weapons and ran toward the ruins’ entrance.

“Kuro, I want to assess the battle situation. Could you draw the monsters away?”

“Leave it to me.”

Kuro nodded, drew the katana at her hip, and dove in to attack the monster horde.

Thanks to Kuro drawing away the monsters, the knights got a brief moment to rest. Meanwhile, I rushed in to support them with my ice axe while asking about the situation.

“Hey, what’s happening out here?”

“We have the situation under control. No one’s injured. But someone is controlling them from behind.”

In three sentences, the knight briefly explained everything I needed to know.

Although this monster horde’s attack wasn’t particularly concerning for the Knights present here, there were still two things to worry about: first, those hiding in the forest directing this battle, and second, the assassins threatening our protection targets who could be anywhere.

“So why are those dragons fighting on the ground?”

This work is hosted on mananovel.com

In my mind, flying dragons unable to fly were no different from sluggish pigs on the ground. But looking over there, where the dragons were ferociously tearing apart monsters with fangs and claws while their riders on top were attacking in all directions with ranged weapons, I probably had to change my perspective. Even though most of their power was sealed, their combat ability was still formidable.

“Ahaha… haha… it’s been so long since I’ve had such a good killing spree.”

Meanwhile, over there, Kuro was laughing maniacally while tearing apart monsters en masse. Just one lightning-fast sweep from her, and the smaller monsters lost limbs while the larger ones lost heads or were torn to pieces. However, it would look better and be more pleasant if she wasn’t laughing like a villain while fighting.

If you looked carefully, occasional dim flashes of light appeared on Kuro’s body.

“Is that lightning or something?”

“Perhaps it’s Lightning magic…”

“Huh?”

The answer to my question came from right behind my ear – Faima’s voice – making me startle and turn around, but she was still standing far over there, in the middle of the bodyguard circle, so how…

“Don’t be so surprised. I’m just using Wind magic to transmit my voice to you.”

“Ah… um… right. That seems effective.” Thanks for reading on ManaNovel!

“The only slight disadvantage is that if there are too many objects blocking the path, the sound quality decreases.”

That voice continued echoing from over there, despite its owner being dozens of meters away from me.

“Kuro-san is using a bit of Lightning magic to enhance her body’s reflexes. I’m sure you know the mechanism behind it, right?”

Yeah, I know this one – human muscles move based on the effects of certain biological compounds that generate weak electrical signals originating from the brain. It takes some time for those signals to travel from the brain to the muscles.

“I only recently came to understand that mechanism myself.”

I didn’t expect she’d know about that too.

“Hmm, that makes it easier to discuss then. In other words, she’s using her electricity to accelerate the speed of neural signals. Although it’s just a weak current, if the body is accustomed to it, both movement speed and reflexes increase significantly. Not to mention she’s compatible with it.”

I’m not entirely sure about the exact numbers, but generally, neural signal transmission speed seems pretty fast already. But for those who’ve reached master level in combat, that’s still too slow – it could be enough to cost them their lives. That’s why in her fighting style, Kuro always pays attention to speed to the point of unconsciously using it without realizing it.

“Wonder what we should call her now? Electric wolf eel maybe?” (Eels can also generate electricity externally)

“Hmm, that seems fitting.”

Although I mercilessly came up with that nickname, I had to admit I somewhat admired that fighting style.

“Well anyway, now’s not the time to think about that. Let me go help her out.”

Although she was fighting vigorously, who knows how long she could maintain it. Not all beastfolk are monsters who can fight all day without tiring. Besides, there were some very strong and large monsters like Ogres on the battlefield. If I left her out there alone, I feared something bad would happen sooner or later.

“Why isn’t that Heaven Dragon team flying up to fight?”

“There are mages in the forest ready to attack them, Mom!”

“Ah right, getting hit while flying fast would hurt badly. But conversely, if they fly fast enough, hitting them wouldn’t be simple.”

Besides going up and down, dragons can move in various directions in space, so if they have enough control ability, it’s not easy to hit such a highly mobile target.

“In that case, Kanna, please go into the forest and disrupt those mages. You’re the most suitable person for that since you can detect magic.”

“Ok, understood. Kuro, come back here and slow down a bit. If you run out of energy then…”

“Kuhahaha… come on… It’s been so long since I’ve fought all out, let me show off a bit…”

Kuro’s frenzy showed no signs of stopping. Seems like none of my words made it into her ears at all.

“If that’s how it is then…”

*Thwap*

“Owtata… something hit my butt… aah… it’s Kanna-shi’s Ice Shuriken… What are you doing? I’m your ally…”

“………..”

“Y-yes, I understand… please stop looking at me like that…”

Once Kuro had calmed down, I turned back to wave goodbye to Faima before grabbing my axe and charging straight into the forest.
