Lumina's Isekai Story

Chapter 13 - George Lancastar

Index

“Good morning, everyone! I’m George Lancastar. I’ll be your teacher for sword fighting.”

“““Yes!”””

It was now afternoon, and I, along with all 80 third graders, stood in rows and columns on the field behind our school building. Looking around, I could see the fourth, fifth, and sixth graders sparring a bit farther away. Although it wasn’t the entire student body of the general studies program, the field was still large enough to accommodate four grades.

As I looked around, a giant shadow suddenly covered me. I looked up and saw that the source of the shadow was our teacher. George had a well-built body and appeared to be in his 40s. He was 185 cm tall and wore a loose-fitting white shirt and blue pants. His hair gleamed with a golden radiance under the sun, and a big smile was plastered on his face.

“So you’re Lumina Chis Chem.”

“I’m surprised you know me?”

I knew that my presence was quite insignificant and that nobody wanted to befriend me. The only times I stood out were rare events, like being a bit late to class or the incident at the canteen, or for reasons I didn’t understand.

“Who doesn’t?”

(Everybody…)

I wanted to voice my thoughts, but it seemed too troublesome. After speaking to me, George started walking to the end of the row. He gave an exaggerated nod and quickly walked back in front of us.

“Everybody! Find a partner and start sparring with each other.”

“““Yes!”””

I was a bit doubtful about his instructions and approached him.

“Umm… Teacher George.”

“Hmm? What is it?”

“Is that really all? No lessons or anything else?”

He suddenly started laughing and, with an even bigger smile, said, “Lessons? Why do I need to teach you lessons? All you need to do is hack, slash, and hit your enemies with your sword.”

“So you’re saying that’s all we’ll be taught?”

“Yep!”

“Until graduation?”

“Yep!”

“Haaa~ Thanks for answering me.”

“No problem. If you have any questions, just ask. I’ll be here, watching all of you.”

I walked away from George and headed toward Emilia. I could feel some people staring at me as I walked. It was quite uncomfortable to be stared at like that. I assumed the reason for their stares was because my clothes made me stand out in the environment.

Normally, they would ignore me because I had black hair, black eyes, and wore a black uniform. I was very inconspicuous. Though there were times when I felt some gazes, I would do my best to ignore them and act as if I didn’t notice.

However, today I was wearing a white T-shirt and red shorts, which made me stand out. Deep down, I felt very embarrassed by their stares. But I did my best to ignore them to avoid tarnishing my family’s reputation.

“You seem tired. Are you okay?”

“I’m fine. I just can’t get used to those stares.”

Emilia chuckled softly as she handed me a wooden sword.

“Isn’t it because of your aura?”

“Nope! I don’t think so. Normally, they’d ignore me.”

She furrowed her brows, looking troubled.

“Weren’t you the one who usually ignored them?”

“I only ignored them because they ignored me.”

“Uh-huh.”

“Anyway, let’s start practicing already. Look, everyone but us has already started.”

I moved a few steps away from Emilia and assumed a stance with my sword.

The stance I took was the most common one I had seen in fantasy shows from my previous life. I placed one foot behind the other and gripped my wooden sword tightly as I faced Emilia.

“Did you practice swordsmanship when you were young, Miss Lumina?”

“Nope, not really. I was just copying someone I once saw.”

“Is that so?”

As question marks seemed to float above her head, Emilia also assumed a stance with her wooden sword. The two of us stood facing each other in silence. The wind blew around us, and the shouts of our fellow classmates echoed in my ears. When a child fell down near us, it became our signal to charge.

I raised my wooden sword high while hers was held low. As soon as she was within my range, I quickly shifted the angle of my attack and targeted her shoulder. It seemed she anticipated where I would strike, as she managed to block it with her wooden sword.

“Shouldn’t it be me asking if you’ve practiced swordsmanship, Emilia?”

“If cooking can be called practicing, then yes.”

“Fufufu…”

“Kukuku…”

I increased my pushing force, and just as she was about to resist, I escaped from the stalemate. Bringing my wooden sword parallel to the ground, I swiftly moved toward her. She used her wooden sword to deflect the force of my attack and countered. To avoid her counterattack, I forced my body to evade her wooden sword by a hair’s breadth.

Seeing that her counterattack failed, she backed away and restored her stance.

“The attack you just made was filled with resentment!?”

“What are you talking about?”

“Are you using this spar as an excuse to get back at me for the math drills I gave you?”

“I don’t understand what you’re talking about.”

“So questioning is futile, huh? Then I’ll use this chance to pay you back for the harassment you’ve been giving me.”

I tightened my grip on the wooden sword and started walking toward her naturally. She raised her guard, waiting for me to enter her sword’s range.

I suddenly dashed to her left, quickly closing the distance. Targeting her flank, I took advantage of her surprise at my inconsistent speed. When she recovered from her shock, she jumped back, disrupting her posture.

“You’re mine!”

“We’ll see about that!”

Just as I thought my wooden sword would connect, a sudden blunt pain assaulted my hands. I became momentarily dumbfounded and paused. I looked around and saw two wooden swords lying on the ground a few steps away.

“So it’s a tie?”

“Yes.”

Emilia adjusted her posture and stood in front of me with a smile. I responded with a smile of my own.

“I’ve never seen you exercise, Emilia. How come you’re so strong and fast?”

“Working as a servant is quite a chore, you know.”

“Is that so?”

“Yes. What about you, Miss Lumina? How come you’re so skilled with the sword? I haven’t seen you practicing or exercising before.”

“A little imagination and tons of motivation did the trick.”

“Is that so?”

“Yes.”

When our conversation ended, Emilia picked up the wooden swords and handed one to me.

“Want to go at it again?”

“If that’s what you want.”

“Then let’s keep going until we’re dead tired! I had fun in the last round.”

“I understand, Miss Lumina.”

We continued fighting each other until our teacher, George, told us that class had ended.
