Chapter 269 - Can I press it once?
“Yes, thanks to you, I’m resting well.”
The old butler’s face glowed when he heard my answer.
“Thank God. If you have time in the evening, the lord has requested to have a meal together.”
“Oh, that’s a bit tough. I’m still tired, so I want to rest more.”
“Yes, then I will tell him,” The old butler said, trying his best to mask his disappointment.
“Then tomorrow…” The butler attempted again.
“No.”
“Oh, alright…”
There was no sign of disappointment, but I could sense his tenacity.
“Well, I’ll see you again at lunchtime.”
“Are you going?”
The butler and other servants had prepared a rather sumptuous breakfast, so it was a shame and a bit embarrassing to eat the food alone.
After staring at other people who were eating, I gently suggested that we all eat together, and they gladly agreed.
During mealtime, I became increasingly familiar with the butler’s mentality. He was a gentle, calm man, possibly because his task was to serve other people. Above all, he provided detailed explanations of the culture and knowledge of the surrounding area.
If possible, I’d like the old butler in my room all day.
“Yes, there are things we need to prepare. If you have urgent business, please call us.”
When he sensed my hesitation, the butler handed me a small cube-shaped object from his pocket.
“It’s a calling machine. When you press the red button here, you’ll be able to get in touch with me, and I’ll respond as soon as I can.”
The surprisingness of the object didn’t result from its performance, but its unusually compact size and small weight.
It was so light that it seemed as though there was nothing in it; it was no bigger than a finger, and it seemed like it would be easily lost.
“Can I press it once?”
The butler nodded in response.
When I pressed the red button, a similar button within the butler’s clothes began to vibrate; it was like a pager. The only difference was that numbers could not be sent.
“Are there other buttons connected to this pager?”
“Yes, and you’ll know who called you by the positioning of the button. The button that’s vibrating right now is the second one from above. We all have a fixed location.”
“Who does the first button belong to?”
“Sung-Joo.”
This was fun. The staff who cleaned the castle and the soldiers around Seongju all wore buttons, so I’d thought it was merely a fashion statement here, but it served for practical reasons.
“Do you need anything else?” the butler asked before leaving the room.
There was one thing I needed. “I want to learn magic here. Is that possible?”
Magic was a closed practice in any world, and in some cases, sharing knowledge and trying to purchase magical artifacts were considered taboo.
“Are you interested in Mado Engineering?”
“Yes, will it be okay?”
Was it not magic, but engineering? I became curious.
“Yes, of course. We have a variety of curriculums. Do you want a detailed guide on each curriculum?”
“Just give me one that’s beginner-oriented.”
I didn’t know the content or organization of the curriculum, and it was likely that I wouldn’t understand it.
If possible, it’d be best to learn the basics first.
During the break, I wanted to learn as much as possible, but there was a possibility that I wouldn’t be able to get anything from being greedy.
“Then I’ll see you again at lunchtime.” Before the butler left the room, he said his farewells once more, and in response, I returned the gesture.
“Kee-ek!”
When I said bye, the frog, who had been sitting quietly in the corner, began to follow me. The butler politely said farewell to not only me but also the frog before he left the room. After his departure, the room became eerily quiet.
Although several servants remained in the room, they worked quietly, not daring to make a sound. It seemed that even though we shared a meal, our relationship didn’t become any more intimate.
“Frog.”
“Kee-ek!”
“Would you like to come in?” I asked while raising my hand, showing the taming ring I’d received from Kim Min-hyuk.
The best aspect of the ring was that it was able to form subpoenas with others, allowing me to summon them whenever I wished.
It created a sub-dimensional space of the summoned’s most desired environment. For a frog, it’d be more comfortable to rest in the sub-dimensional space rather than this room.
“Kea-ek!”
“Okay. Just stay here, then,” I exasperatedly told the frog, and laid back in bed.
As the bed applied magical effects to my body, I quickly slipped into a deep slumber. It wasn’t long before I had to wake up, but the exhaustion that weighed down my body made me want to continue to sleep.
Getting out of the bed proved to be a more difficult challenge than I’d expected.
[What are you going to do?] asked Seregia.
“I told you I’m taking a break.”
Seregia didn’t respond to my answer, but its silence didn’t mean approval; it meant that it expected a more detailed explanation.
“I’ll be learning magic when the time comes. Oh, let’s go outside and look around from tomorrow. This is a pretty unique place.”
The characteristics of the area that I saw when I first entered the stage were unusual.
I wanted to see how it truly was with my own eyes.
